Shark Cage Diving!
OK, so shark cage diving is one of those things that I never pictured myself doing. But South Africa is the Great White Shark capitol of the world, so when in Rome…
We used our hostel to book a tour, which was run by Marine Dynamics. They are awesome! Marine Dynamics is a non-profit organization, dedicated to Great White shark preservation. They don’t feed the sharks in order to attract them to the boat, nor do they harm them in any way. In addition to a knowledgable staff, there is also a marine biologist onboard each sailing to answer questions.
They gave us a quick briefing, and then we set off to the boat.
The cage!
They gave us our wetsuits, water shoes, and goggles, and put a weight on us to keep us from floating up too much. Then, into the cage we went. Believe it or not, it wasn’t scary at all! I felt very safe in the cage. And then the sharks… AMAZING!!! It was unbelievable to see these majestic animals up close and personal, swimming right in front of our cage! It truly was one of those awe-inspiring, life-altering experiences. Lots more pictures (and a video!) of the actual diving and sharks, but I won’t get them for a few weeks… stay tuned!
So the bad news… I got insanely boat sick! Just the motion of the boat bobbing up and down was enough to make me ill. I am so thankful that I was able to go cage diving before it really set in. But I was pretty miserable. There were four of us who spent the rest of the trip keeled over the side of the boat. And being the good friend he is, Sunil took blackmail photos! The staff were great… brought us all bottled water, wet wipes, and mints to make us feel better. Luckily I felt 100% better once on dry land!
Along the way, seal island.
Shark photos and video to come!
Love and hate the fact that you are living one of my dreams. I am so jealous…especially as I sit here in Toms River in the rain…boo!!!!
You should start a shark cage diving company in Seaside 😉 Don’t worry Jon, I know you’ll get to experience your diving dream one day!
That sounds awesome. I’m sure the pictures are amazing too. Shark Cage Diving is one of the things on my list of things to do….
You have to do it – it’s an amazing experience! I will post more pics when I get a chance!

While shark cage diving is not on my list of things to do, I still think you are AH-MAHZING for doing it. Not sure what has happened to our Kiks, but me likes!
Thanks Kristy! Just trying to get a few badass points before I return home 😉
