Christmas Eve at the Airport

Well, here it is Christmas Eve, and I’m spending it at the airport. Don’t feel too bad for me though; I was upgraded on my connecting flight, and I’ll most likely fall asleep the minute I settle into my seat (all of my friends will vouch for that!). In fact, I love airports. Yeah, yeah, I know they’re not as fun when you’re a grown-up trying to catch a business flight. But when you’re headed somewhere fun, it’s invigorating! I’m frequently asked if I’m excited about an upcoming trip, but the truth is that I tend to only start feeling excited when I get to the airport; that’s when it feels real to me. Something about the hustle and bustle, the energy and excitement. And it’s just about the best place for people watching (I’m currently watching a 6 year old Brazilian girl rounding up every small child in the vicinity for a rousing game of tag; I love that language barrriers haven’t deterred them!).

Now that the scene has been set, one of my favorite quotes (from one of my favorite movies, Love Actually) comes to mind:

“Whenever I get gloomy with the state of the world, I think about the arrivals gate at Heathrow Airport. General opinion’s starting to make out that we live in a world of hatred and greed, but I don’t see that. It seems to me that love is everywhere. Often, it’s not particularly dignified or newsworthy, but it’s always there – fathers and sons, mothers and daughters, husbands and wives, boyfriends, girlfriends, old friends. When the planes hit the Twin Towers, as far as I know, none of the phone calls from the people on board were messages of hate or revenge – they were all messages of love. If you look for it, I’ve got a sneaky feeling you’ll find that love actually is all around.”

Happy Holidays, everyone!

  1. I enjoy the airport, too. Xmas Eve is a great day to travel; the airport is half as busy as usual today and they have the TBS “A Christmas Story” marathon going on the TVs right now in the F Terminal at Hartsfield-Jackson. See you in Rio!
